The Maybeck Foundation
"Inspired by the life and work of architect Bernard Maybeck, the Maybeck Foundation was established in 1995 to broaden public awareness of the art of architecture. In promoting the Bay area's legacy of artistic and humane design, the Foundation seeks to forward this message-- that art is essential to life. To this end, architecture must be an inspired and inspiring art as it sustains our daily lives." Our Bill Buchanan is a trustee of the Maybeck foundation.

Swedenborgian Church
An interesting site on a radically rustic building very influential in Maybeck's development. The architect of record was A. Page Brown. However the church was largely designed by the Mr. Joseph Worchester, whose design ideas Brown reportedly didn't think were "architecture". Maybeck was a draftsman in Brown's office. Charles Keeler, friend and contemporary of all involved calls Maybeck "the Architect" of the Church but also credits Reverend Worchester's architectural and artistic opinions with stetting off the Bay Area Renaissance and Maybeck in particular. A particularly nifty chain: Worchester's house, which captivated the young Maybeck and influenced his "Simple Home" designs, was inspired by the cabin Worchester's friend John Muir had built in Yosemite. For More: A Gothic Man (unpublished biography of Maybeck)
Scholars have argued which of Brown's draftsmen- Maybeck or AC Schweinfurth- was more influential. We'd argue for Maybeck, in part due to his preexisting admiration for Worchester, but think that neither of them dominated- Worchester did.
Brookings South Coast Inn Bed & Breakfast - Brookings, Oregon
A link to a bed & breakfast that is in a house that was designed by Maybeck, located in Brookings. It has been recommended to us.
PatternLanguage.com
A site by architect and writer Christopher Alexander, author of "A Pattern Language". It is full of resources. To our eyes, Alexander's architecture is very much in Maybeck's spirit. Some of Alexander's books are listed on our books page.
