Dining: Brookings-Area Restaurants

Our Suggestions

This isn't a complete or even fair list. These are just places we recommend to our clients, whom we want to have a good time.

We've included it here because we're asked for restaurant recommendations more than we are asked about anything else.

•Chives

Update: Chives is now in Gold Beach- Rick and Carla got offered a beautiful oceanfront place at the north end of town.-- we hope to tempt them back

Rick and Carla Jackson are a young couple who came to town a few years ago. Carla is the petite blond who seats you, Rick is the tall dark-haired chef. Rick cooked previously in Santa Barbara and San Francisco, including at the Sheraton Palace. He also had an odd stint as personal chef for Andy Granatelli (the race car driver). Carla likes dogs. The food is world-class, the wine list decent, and the atmosphere couldn't be friendlier. Most dinners are less than $20. Located in an inauspicious- looking strip mall building on the ocean side of 101, in Brookings. Reservations 469-4121. Chives will be moving up to the Harbor Hills soon.

The Great American Smokehouse

Good Seafood. On the east side of 101 as you head south out of Harbor. 469-6903

O'Holleran's

The oldest restaurant in Brookings. Defiantly not fancy, but a good place to go for good steak and prime rib. Reasonable prices. North of Rubio's on 101. 469-9907

•Rubio's

Informal, comfortable, and they serve homemade Mexican food. Most meals are less than $10. Across 101 from Chives. 469-4919. They also have a bed and breakfast.

Torero's

Good, reasonably priced Mexican food. Down by the harbor. 469-2771

•Lee's Dragon Gate

Good Chinese food. Fresh ingredients, inexpensive. 479-3988

Java Java

A fine coffee shop with a nice dim wood interior. In Brookings near the theater. A frequent stop of bicyclists and their thighs.

Breakers

Another good coffee shop. In Harbor on the west side of 101. They have a couch. Good magazines- Harper's, The Atlantic, Granta etc. Owners are freshly arrived from Colorado and have been overheard expressing shock when locals have discussed hunting elk and other such horrible things.

Slugs and Stones

Ice cream. At the port. They give sample cones to our dogs, so they deserve your patronage.

The Chetco Seafood Company

A couple of local fishermen have have made their tasty smoked and canned catch available for purchase over the web here.
